4 seminars on the art and craft of filmmaking

In a series of four two-hour lectures, director Longinos Panayi analyzes the various stages of filmmaking. The course covers the scenario, the production process, the directing, filming and editing. Through theory, technical analysis and screening of world cinema masterpieces, attendees will have the opportunity to acquire basic script, film and film production skills. More specifically, the course modules will be:

1. THE ART OF STORYTELLING AND SCRIPTWRITING 
Ancient myths, fairy tales and our need to share our stories.
The structure of myth and the morphology of fairy tales. Dramatic art, literature and script. Aristotle's "Poetry" and modern scenario theories. From Idea to Scripture: Process and Technique. How to write the treatment and the final draft. The creation of the basic characters and the art of dialogue.

2. THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
The four stages of cinematographic production: development, pre-production, production and post-production. The "translation" of the scenario into image and sound and costing. Budget creation and funding search. Selecting partners and finding the right places and techniques for spinning. Sweeping: the unexpected and opportunities. Editing, collaboration with the composer, the final cut. The ultimate technical processing of sound and image. Viewing and promoting the movie.

3. THE LANGUAGE OF IMAGE: CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING
Cinematographer’s means: The camera, the lens, the movement, the light. Choosing the right materials for the corresponding film. The format. The location of the camera. The lenses, frame, focus and depth of field. The 5 moves of the camera. Color and light (basic illumination, filters). The art of editing: creating new meaning (the effect of the Koulesov and the Russian pioneers). The expressive and descriptive editing and the inner rhythm of each plan.

4. DESCRIPTION: AESTHETICS AND TECHNIQUES
Separating the scenario into sequences, scenes and shots. The technique of decoupage (shot-list) and storyboard. Choosing the tone, style, aesthetics and the atmosphere of the film. Selecting the size of the plan, position and movement of the camera. The collaboration of the director with the director of photography, the technical crew and the rest of the artistic staff. Casting and teaching the actors: from rehearsals to set. The mise en scene: the dynamic of the frame and the placement of the actor.

Longinos Panagi was born in Nicosia in 1970. He studied Journalism in Cyprus and Film Directing in Athens and Prague. He has worked for many years as a journalist and film critic. He has written two poetry collections, a novel and a theatrical play he directed at the Experimental Stage of THOC. After three short films he has just completed his first feature film entitled "Clementine", produced by Roll-Out and sponsored by SEKIN.
